IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has lashed out at a former IFP councillor, who, he says, orchestrated the arrest of his daughter and two other party members on intimidation charges.

Buthelezi said in a letter last Friday, that Makhosonke Msibi, who defected to the ANC and is now the party’s chairman in Ulundi, was behind the arrests.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said Phumzile Buthelezi, 55, Sipho Madlopha, 52, and Khanyisani Ngema, 40, were arrested on Thursday on charges of intimidating ANC councillor Skhumbuzo Mabaso during a meeting at Ulundi.

They appeared in the Ulundi Magistrate’s Court on Friday and were released on R300 bail each.

Buthelezi claims that the three were arrested after an incident at the Mbatha traditional council headquarters. “I am informed that the meeting was attended by the inkosi of the Mbatha clan and his people. My information is that my daughter and other leaders tried to caution Mabaso not to show disrespect to the inkosi; however I cannot vouch for what happened there.”

Buthelezi added that Msibi was causing tension between the ANC and IFP. “Unless the ANC leadership reins in Msibi, he is likely to cause unnecessary ructions and further widen the chasm that exists between the ANC and the IFP.”

Responding to Buthelezi’s remarks, Msibi said no one was above the law. “If someone has committed a crime, then they must be arrested. It does not matter which party they are from, even if it is an ANC person they should still face the charge. She (Phumzile Buthelezi) went into that meeting and made accusations about Mabaso. We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour; we will make it stop.”
