Doctors have ordered the Governor-General, Sir Anand Satyanand, to spend a few more days in hospital.

Sir Anand was admitted to Auckland City Hospital on Monday morning after struggling with a chest infection.

Government House public affairs manager Antony Paltridge said Sir Anand was "on the mend" but was not yet ready to return home.

"His doctors have recommended he stay in hospital for a couple more days. We can't say much more than that at this stage."

Paltridge said he was unsure when Sir Anand would return to official duties.

Earlier, Official Secretary Niels Holm said Sir Anand had been suffering from a chest infection for the past couple of days.

He was taken to Auckland City Hospital as a precaution after his cough worsened on Sunday night. But an ambulance was not required to transport him.

Sir Anad was unable to comment to media directly, Paltridge said.
