ENG: Mark Serwotka (born 26 April 1963) is the General Secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), the trade union for British civil servants. Political activity Serwotka became a union representative in 1980 and a personal case officer in 1995. In the 2000 election that saw Serwotka elected General Secretary, he initially faced two rival candidates: Hugh Lanning of the Membership First faction and the incumbent Barry Reamsbottom of the National Moderate Group. However, Reamsbottom did not secure the fifty branch nominations needed to appear on the ballot paper. Serwotka then beat Lanning with 41,000 to 33,000 votes. Mark Serwotka: Tax workers take action over jobs


Tax workers have launched a fresh wave of industrial action in a long-running dispute over job losses and privatisation. Members of the Public and Commercial Services union started weeks of action short of a strike, which will include a work to rule, in protest at Revenue and Customs job cuts. Mark Serwotka: Jobcentre staff set for strike


Thousands of Jobcentre staff are due to go on strike in a long-running row over "oppressive working conditions and unrealistic targets". They claim that "draconian" conditions are preventing them from providing a decent service. PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "With unemployment remaining high and our economy in the grip of recession, it is shameful that Jobcentre bosses are still refusing to let their staff provide the kind of help and advice that people need.
