胡锦涛生于中国江苏泰州姜堰市，祖籍安徽绩溪，家族自其曾祖起从安徽省绩溪县龙川村迁至江苏姜堰一带。父亲胡静之，母亲李文瑞，都出生于江苏姜堰。胡锦涛最初就读于泰州大埔小学，1953年进入私立泰州中学（现泰州二中）初中，1956年考入江苏省泰州中学，1959年考进清华大学水利工程系。在清华大学期间曾任学生文工团舞蹈队团支部书记、水利系政治辅导员。1964年4月加入中国共产党。
